The classic case was 1964 when LBJ won because the Republican Party would not back Goldwater. LBJ socialized America more than any president, giving us Welfare, Medicare, and Medicaid. He also increased our involvement in Vietnam and then mismanaged that war. If this stand costs me social media friends or other friends, then so be it. It is a highly logical and principled stand with history behind it. The Republican Party nominee must be elected to the office.
Gingrich, who is not perfect, but whom I respect, suggests to do otherwise in the face of a Democrat Party win would be immoral. That is because of what that party stands for. If you do not like what Trump stands for, remember the president does not control everything. I have suggested in other writings that to put the country at greater risk by a vote boycott toys around with and dances around treasonous behavior without actually crossing that line.
I'm not name calling; I'm labeling erroneous thoughts, not people. I'm suggesting seriously erroneous thought processes in very good, concerned people who are so emotionally involved in a campaign that they are thinking only of ideology and not considering reality, not considering how real world politics works, has worked, and will continue to work. National suicide is achieved when we do not support the candidate of the party opposing the socialist leaning Democrats. If you destroy the Republican Party with petty choices, the next party to replace it will work the same way. That is if we do not become a one party (communist-like) nation under the socialist Democrats.
I'm an independent. I vote Republican because it is the big party that is not socialist, the only choice because new 3rd. parties cannot win and the Democrats get and keep power. That is the reality of it, and I'm facing reality. New 3rd. parties (if they survive at all) take years to gain support in numbers. The support his fans currently give Cruz is worthy; but the trashing of Trump aids a Hillary win if he is the opposition candidate, providing her with material. She will take the nation into communism; he wouldn't. Trump is then the lesser of evils and maybe a more pleasant surprise. He is at least a nationalist.
I've written a novel about that (communism in America). Oh well, perhaps I will sell a few and make some money . . . until they ban and burn it.
